Just spent a week out west in the never ending quest for landscape cutis anserina. The trip was an awe inspiring exploration of the Tetons and Yellowstone that left me with hundreds of new ideas and creative inspirations.

Sure, you can go to Brimfield to instagram rusty bicycles…or you can source unique site furnishings for your residential design clients. Vintage steel mill bin* ($35) with recycled mahogany top (custom) and cast iron cauldron ($40) are coupled with Woodard mesh sculptra patio chairs to fit the client’s industrial meets mid-century outdoor aesthetic.
*The hand-painted “8” puts this piece over!
The BSLA EPs are hosting nerd nite this Monday…and we’re making efforts to reach out to the larger design community beyond landscape architecture; Lee Moreau from Continuum Innovation and Maxim from Formlabs will be discussing their work at the Middlesex Lounge on April 29th in Cambridge.

My drawing series aim to re-discover the North American landscape by investigating its diverse ecological and cultural landscapes covering topics ranging from soil profiles to stone fences, beavers to broken ax handles, coastal mapping to geology ID tags, point blankets to nurse logs, and colonial flags to other disruptive pattern material found in New England and the Far North of Canada.

Beavers are ecosystem engineers in that their two principle activities, their construction of dams and their foraging, can profoundly change channel “geomorphology and consequently the hydrological characteristics and biotic properties of their landscape” (Rosell et al. 2005, MacDowell and Neiman 1986). Beavers create ponds that alter a series of resources used by other organisms (Neiman et al. 1986, Jones et al. 1994). In the creation of ponds beavers in effect “change, maintain, and create habitat by modulating the availability of resources of both biotic and abiotic materials for themselves and for other species” (Jones et al. 1994). This modulation of resources has profound ecological effects and has the power to transform landscapes on a large scale

As I toured Mount Auburn Cemetery with sketch book in hand this weekend, I had to ask, “What self-identifying landscape architect doesn’t appreciate a well designed cemetery? I’d take the Mount Auburn Cemetery over the High Line any day, living or dead.

Tri-state transportation study investigating recreational transportation trends in
Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. This primary field research aims to measure sustainable cutis anserina over the course of five months in the Spring and Summer of 2012.
The research is to be published in new allied design professional journal, Terror Field in the article entitled, “A critique of Landscape Urbanism’s Pedagogical Trend.
