Figure Four: Winter Nurse Log, Silkscreen Print
The nurse log is a familiar sight in the forest… if you look for it. The nurse log, essentially a fallen tree covered with a layer of moss and organic debris, is a natural woodland germination field for native species of shade loving plants including Tsuga candensis (hemlock), Betula lenta (black birch), and various mosses.

Invasive Species Hex: Beetles
Often seen on old barns, traditional hex signs were used by farmers to ward off bad luck and encourage healthy growing seasons. The first in a series of three, this hex sign features the Anoplophora glabripennis (Asian Longhorned Beetle), which has caused the destruction of countless hardwood trees, and the Lilioceris lilii (lily beetle), which has decimated true lily populations throughout North America.

Invasive Species Hex: Bi-valve
The second in a series of three, this hex sign highlights marine invasives that affect the Adirondack region. Corbicula fluminea (asian clam) and Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel) infest waterways and cause biofouling—clogging condenser tubes, water pipes and firefighting equipment. Flora represent Potamogeton crispus (curly-leaf pondweed), whose dense mats inhibit native species growth and recreational activities.

Invasive Species Hex: Borer
The third in a series of three, this hex sign wards against Agrilus planipennis (Emerald Ash Borer). First introduced to the United States in shipping materials, the beetle has spread throughout the country killing tens of millions of ash trees.
